About this semester
Semester 2 builds directly on the Sem 1 foundation. Partnership accounts go deeper, Economics shifts toward macroeconomics, and two new subjects — Business Law and Cost Accounting — are introduced. Students who found Sem 1 Accountancy manageable will find Sem 2 more demanding but logical once the concepts click. Official VNSGU B.Com Sem 2 papers from 2019 to 2024 are available here, free to download.
🎓 Academic Strategy & Preparation Overview
B.Com Semester 2 builds directly on the first-semester foundation. The core challenge shifts to Advanced Financial Accounting, where partnership admission and retirement adjustments require multi-stage ledger closures. Cost Accounting is introduced, requiring students to prepare stock valuation sheets using FIFO or LIFO. Business Law introduces the Indian Contract Act 1872, requiring a shift from generic essay-writing to structured legal citations and arguments. Macroeconomics covers national income metrics and RBI policies. Practicing with these question papers is the most effective way to perfect your ledger formats, memorize legal principles, and build the calculation speed necessary to complete the exam on time.
What you study in B.Com Sem 2
Financial Accounting — Advanced
Partnership accounts in full: admission of a new partner (goodwill valuation, revaluation of assets/liabilities, capital adjustment), retirement of a partner (gaining ratio, goodwill treatment, settlement), and death of a partner (executor's account). Joint venture accounts and consignment accounts are also covered. These are calculation-heavy topics where following the correct sequence of steps matters as much as getting the right numbers.
Business Economics (Macro)
National income — concepts (GDP, GNP, NNP, NI, PI, DI) and measurement methods (product, income, expenditure). Money and banking — functions of money, commercial banks, central bank (RBI) and its functions, monetary policy instruments. Public finance — government revenue, expenditure, budget types, fiscal policy. Indian economic planning and current economic issues round out the syllabus.
Business Law / Mercantile Law
Indian Contract Act 1872 — essential elements of a valid contract, types of contracts, offer and acceptance, consideration, capacity to contract, free consent, void agreements, discharge of contract, breach and remedies. Sale of Goods Act 1930 — sale vs agreement to sell, conditions and warranties, transfer of ownership. This is a purely theoretical subject; case-based application questions are common.
Cost Accounting
Cost concepts (fixed, variable, semi-variable), cost classification, material costing (FIFO, LIFO, weighted average for inventory valuation), labour costing (time rate, piece rate, incentive schemes), overhead absorption methods, job costing, and process costing basics.
Business Statistics
Measures of central tendency and dispersion (revision and extension from Sem 1), correlation and regression, index numbers, time series analysis, interpolation and extrapolation. Calculation questions are direct marks — show your working step by step.
Exam structure
| Section | Marks | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Section A | 10 | 5 × 2 marks short answers |
| Section B | 15 | 3 out of 5 × 5 marks |
| Section C | 20 | 2 out of 3 × 10 marks |
Topics that appear repeatedly
Accountancy
Admission of a partner — complete problem covering goodwill, revaluation account, and capital accounts (this appears almost every year as a large question). Retirement of a partner — gaining ratio, goodwill written off, new balance sheet.
Business Law
Define and explain the essential elements of a valid contract with examples. Difference between condition and warranty under Sale of Goods Act. Discharge of contract — modes with one example each.
Cost Accounting
Material cost using FIFO or weighted average (a solved numerical is expected). Labour cost calculation — piece rate vs time rate comparison. Overhead absorption rate — machine hour rate or labour hour rate numerical.
Macro Economics
National income calculation using income method or expenditure method. RBI's role as a central bank — functions listed and explained. Types of budget — surplus, deficit, balanced — with current Indian context.
Practical notes
- →Partnership accounts in Sem 2 follow a fixed sequence of steps. Memorize the order: calculate goodwill, prepare revaluation account, adjust capital accounts, close the old books or open new ones. Skipping a step mid-problem leads to cascading errors.
- →Business Law answers need to follow a clear structure: state the legal rule, explain it, give an example. Vague answers without a cited Act or section rarely score full marks.
