Industry Project & Dissertation· 180
About this semester
VNSGU MCA Semester 4 is exclusively dedicated to a 6-month full-time Industry Internship and Capstone Project (Course Code: 2111040104010001). Under the AICTE two-year postgraduate framework, there are no traditional written theory papers. Instead, students are evaluated through a comprehensive 100-to-120 page hardbound Dissertation Report, a live deployed software demonstration, and a rigorous Grand Technical Viva-Voce conducted by university-appointed external examiners. The evaluation carries comprehensive weightage split between continuous industry mentor appraisal and final university viva defense.
Software Requirement Specification (SRS)
IEEE 830 compliant software requirement documentation, functional and non-functional requirements, use-case specifications, actor-system interaction modeling, and feasibility analysis.
System Architecture & Database Modeling
Multi-tier system architectures (MVC, Microservices, Client-Server), UML behavioral and structural diagrams (Class, Sequence, Activity, State Machine), relational database normalization (up to 3NF/BCNF) or NoSQL document modeling, and RESTful API contract specifications.
Full-Stack Implementation & Version Control
Enterprise software development using modern production stacks (MERN, Spring Boot, .NET Core, Django, Laravel, Flutter), clean code principles, environment separation (development, staging, production), Git branch workflows, and containerized deployment (Docker).
Software Testing & Quality Assurance
Test plan formulation, automated unit testing, integration testing, boundary value analysis, equivalence partitioning test cases, regression testing, and security vulnerability audits (SQL injection, XSS, CSRF).
Dissertation Report & Grand Technical Viva-Voce
Technical thesis defense covering problem definition, architectural trade-offs, database query optimization, security implementation, and live codebase walkthrough in front of external examiners.
| Evaluation Component | Assessor / Authority | Assessment Focus | Weightage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mid-Term Progress Review | Internal Project Committee | SRS validation, UML models, and prototype progress | 50 Marks |
| Industry Mentor Assessment | Company / Industry Supervisor | Professional conduct, coding discipline, and delivery | 50 Marks |
| Final Dissertation Report | External & Internal Examiners | Technical thesis documentation, IEEE standard compliance | 100 Marks |
| Live Project Demonstration | External University Examiner | Working software, database CRUD, and responsiveness | 100 Marks |
| Grand Technical Viva-Voce | External University Examiner | System architecture, design patterns, and code defense | 100 Marks |
| Total Semester Evaluation | VNSGU Examination Authority | Comprehensive Capstone Project & Viva | 400 Marks (Min 160 to Pass) |
Students must obtain a minimum of 40% aggregate marks across both internal continuous appraisal and external university viva.
System Architecture
Monolithic vs Microservices trade-offs; Client-server REST architecture; State management and JWT token-based authentication; Middleware security pipelines (CORS, Helmet, Rate Limiting).
Database Design
Relational database normalization (1NF to BCNF) vs NoSQL indexing strategies; Foreign key constraints and cascade rules; ACID transactions and concurrency control; Database indexing and query execution plans.
Software Engineering & Testing
Agile Scrum lifecycle vs Waterfall model; IEEE 830 SRS structure; Equivalence partitioning and boundary value test matrices; Code refactoring and design patterns applied.
Viva-Voce Core Questions
Why did you select this specific technology stack? Walk through your database schema relationships. How do you handle error states and data validation? Demonstrate your code commit history and production build deployment.
